Shoot! Global Youth Resistance to Violence

Young photographers wanted for project on youth overcoming violence...

At any given time there are approximately 40 wars being fought in our world.
In 83 countries, landmines continue to kill and maim innocent civilians, even though they are illegal under international law.
In Canada, young people are often most at-risk in violent crime. Almost all victims of violent crime in Canada are between 13-30 years old.

Across the world, we are learning that violence is normal, whether it is in our homes, schools or in the ground beneath our feet. Curiosity has become mistrust for youth living in communities affected by violence – from regions contaminated with landmines to schoolyards poisoned by bullying. Youth from across the world are coming together to speak out against violence. It is NOT inevitable, natural or permanent.

The Shoot Project uses photographs to speak out against violence. Photos are powerful images that can transcend language, and allow youth from communities to communicate and learn from each other. They can show us the problem – or show how youth are confronting violence in their communities.

The Youth Mine Action Ambassador Program (YMAAP) is organizing a Gala to kick off Canadian Landmine Awareness Week (February 28th - March 5th, 2005). The theme of Canadian Landmine Awareness Week this year is "Ordinary People, Extraordinary Impact".

The Gala will highlight the Extraordinary Talents of young performers from across Winnipeg, and make an Impact by raising funds for projects that raise awareness about landmines in Canada, and assist landmine survivors internationally.

YMAAP will be accepting a few performers for the Gala, which will take place on February 26th, 2005 at the Gas Station Theatre. If you, or someone you know, is a young person with an Extraordinary Talent (dance, singing, acrobatics, music, theatre, etc.) please contact the Youth Mine Action Ambassador Program at winnipeg@dangermines.ca or (204) 987-6422 to find out how to apply.

Performers must be free to rehearse during the afternoon and perform during the evening of February 26th, 2005.

There are still a few more spots in the Peace & Mines, Rising 2 Action Symposium.

It's going to be an amazing two days, featuring workshops by Darryl Toews and Meredith Daun from the Manitoba Campaign to Ban Landmines, Anna Snyder on Women and War, MLA Rob Altemeyer on Government Relations, Jonathan Tan on Engaging the Media and a lot more.

It takes place from 4:30pm - 9:30pm on Thursday, January 13th and then 8:00am-6:30pm on Friday, January 14th. The Symposium is Free! and we'll feed you!

Peace & Mines, Rising 2 Action Symposium
January 13th - 14th, 2005

Connect with the global campaign against landmines – join youth around the world fighting against this indiscriminate weapon.
Make connections with other issues you care about – landmines impact women and children, food sustainability, health care, and the environment. Did you know that landmines often kill endangered species like the silverback gorilla?
Learn concrete skills – find out how to engage the media, how to organize volunteers, and how to organize eye-catching events?
Make an impact on your community – Share your knowledge and skills back with the community at the Symposium.

High school students and recent high school graduates from across the prairies are invited to attend the Symposium. The Symposium is FREE and limited travel subsidies are available for out of town participants.
